Build On What Works
Experience matters. A proven record matters. And Leo is ready to keep working for the people of Welland.
Change is sometimes necessary, but it should be for a reason. Leo believes in building on what works, addressing what needs to change, and continuing to move Welland forward — not changing just for the sake of change. Click below to see what your Welland Council has accomplished in recent years.
The Heart of Leo’s Campaign
"I will focus on keeping Welland a safe, vibrant and affordable place to live while planning responsibly for the future. That means supporting strong neighbourhoods, responsible growth, well-maintained infrastructure and services, and making decisions that protect the quality of life residents value today and for generations to come."
- Leo
A VOTE FOR LEO IS
Protecting Welland Today and Preparing for Tomorrow
Climate resilience is about being prepared and protecting our community, while making responsible decisions for Welland’s future.
Leo believes Welland should take a practical approach to climate resilience — planning ahead, protecting our infrastructure and making wise investments that benefit residents today and for generations to come.
Priorities include:
-
Improving stormwater management & drainage
-
Protecting trees & green space
-
Preparing for extreme heat
-
Ensuring new infrastructure is built to withstand changing weather conditions
Leo believes Welland should work with the Niagara Region and senior levels of government to secure funding for climate-resilience projects, so taxpayers are not carrying the entire burden.
A Councillor Who Listens
Leo is committed to being available, responding to concerns and working hard every day for the people of Welland. His campaign is focused on practical priorities that matter to residents.

ROADS & INFRASTRUCTURE
Invest in Welland’s roads, drainage and infrastructure while planning responsibly for the city’s future.

RESPONSIBLE SPENDING & AFFORDABLE TAXES
Make responsible financial decisions, protect taxpayer dollars and ensure city spending delivers value for residents.

CLIMATE RESILIENCE & GREEN SPACE
Improve stormwater management, protect trees and green spaces, prepare for extreme weather and build resilient infrastructure.

RESPONSIBLE GROWTH
Support thoughtful development that keeps pace with Welland’s infrastructure and services while protecting the character of our community.

SAFE, CONNECTED COMMUNITIES
Listen to residents, support strong neighbourhoods and work collaboratively with Council, the Region and other levels of government.

Keeping Seniors in Welland
Welland lost 115 long-term care beds when a local facility closed, leaving families with fewer options for seniors to receive care close to home. Leo believes our community should not permanently lose these beds because an aging facility needed to be replaced. He will continue to push the provincial government to replace all 115 beds and build a new, modern long-term care home in Welland, so seniors can remain close to their families, friends and community.
About Leo
Family has always been an important part of Leo Van Vliet’s life. Leo and his wife Ann are proud to have raised their family in the Welland community.
His deep roots in the community, working career and commitment to public service have given him a strong understanding of the people and issues that matter to Welland families.
Leo worked at Union Carbide and then continued his career with the Niagara Region as a supervisor of landfill sites & Environmental Services. His commitment to helping others also led him to serve the community as a volunteer firefighter.
Leo has brought that same spirit of service to Welland City Council, where he has worked to represent residents, listen to their concerns and find practical solutions for the community.
